CCS June 1985 Capsule

June 19, 2025

Armed with full-pads and his trusty fish-eye, photographer Matt Price and skater Charlie Tanner helped CCS throw it back to forty years ago where it all started—recreating the drawing from our first CCS ad in Thrasher in June 1985.

In 1985 CCS wasn’t a catalog or skate shop —just a single landline in the back of Central Coast Surfboards in San Luis Obispo, California. The name CCS came out of necessity; they couldn’t afford new stickers, so they reused the surf shop’s initials, and came up with California Cheap Skates.

The June 1985 capsule pulls art from that first Thrasher ad. Neon and sun-faded colorways, featuring the original California Cheap Skates logo and archival graphics, pay tribute to our roots and an era of endless summers. For the past forty years CCS has been synonymous with skateboarding.
