Sebo Walker Interview

Sebo Walker Interview

When we heard that Lakai was collaborating with Krooked Skateboards, we had a hunch on who it was behind connecting these two great companies. Even if he wasn’t staring at you right now, and even if you hadn’t already clicked on the Sebo Walker Interview icon, surely you would’ve known too, right? For some time now, Sebo has been making a name for himself as someone everyone wants to skate with. His effortless style and genial nature are the foundation of every chill skatepark homie. We used the Krooked x Lakai Collaboration as an excuse to ask Sebo a few questions about his life, how he got here, and how he’s liking being pro. Hope you enjoy the interview and don’t forget to check out the entire collection as well as Sebo’s Krooked board .

What’s up Sebo! Where are you right now, and what are you doing? Hey man, I'm at Abbot’s Habit in Venice, painting some custom grip for kids, and hopefully getting some reading in if I finish my projects.

Do you have an all-time favorite spot? My all time favorite spot in on Brescia, Italy. It's a beautiful plaza with a bunch of spots. Second would have to be macba.

So it’s been a little over a year now that you’ve been pro for Krooked. Is it everything you thought it’d be? Being pro is a dream come true for sure. To be pro for krooked is unreal. My favorite company with an awesome team of guys I've always been a huge fan of. I would say it isn't necessarily everything I thought it would be, but I'm so blessed and happy to be where I'm at.

Do you think living in a van played a crucial role in your going pro? Yeah, I think it helped show my dedication, and helped me personally get to a healthier & stronger place. It also seemed like people loved the story behind it. I did it so I would have a safe place to sleep every night and just got lucky that it ended up being a crucial detail in my journey of chasing the dream to turning pro.

What’s the worst and best part about living in a van? I would say that the worst part was just having the occasional lonely nights, not having family close. The best part was definitely just the freedom of it. Living a simple life with a small amount of material possessions, and feeling free to travel and be wherever I want to be with no hold backs.

For those who don’t know, what part of the Northwest did you grow up in? I grew up in Salem, Oregon.

What are some of the challenges of skateboarding up here in the great Pacific Northwest? The biggest challenge was definitely the weather. It rains so much in the winter it made it tough to keep skating and stay motivated, without getting into other things. I skated in my garage a lot, and the fun of learning new tricks & DOS (indoor park in Portland) always got me through those rainy winters.

You’ve talked about Mike Carroll’s part in Modus Operandi being an early inspiration. What’s it like to have him as a boss? Yeah, I love that part. Rick & Mike have always been two of my favorites. I greatly admire what they've done for skateboarding and I feel honored to be a part of lakai, and get to skate with them.

Come to think of it you have a lot of cool bosses. What was it like skateboarding with Gonz for the first time? Gonz is the best. He embodies this kid-like excitement for skating that's so contagious. He's so excited and fired up to try new tricks, find new spots, skate the most mundane obstacle but in a different way that makes it fun. It often changes my perspective on how I see spots. He loves skateboarding so much and every time I skate with him, I remember the exact reason why I (we all) started skating in the first place.

The Krooked x Lakai collab seems like a match made in heaven. What was the process like to get this collab going? I started working on it with Jeff Mikut a couple years ago. I wanted to do a funky color way, and a simple one. Jeff and I worked well together, and came up with the yellow and the black. Gave it the blue sole for an extra touch, and added all the krooked flavor. I'm really happy with how they came out!

Thanks Jeff. You're the best & thanks lakai & krooked for making it happen.

Sebo Walker Interview

Is there a story behind the canary yellow colorway? Is that right? Canary Yellow? I like to call it a chalk yellow, but that works! I just had a vision at the time for a yellow shoe. I messed with a lot of colors on illustrator on my own, and the yellow was just something that I saw as unique and fun, so we made it happen.

Was it hard choosing a shoe for this collab? How did you decide on the Griffin? It wasn't hard at all, we picked Griffin right off the bat. The Griffin is a great seller, it’s such a solid skate shoe, and is my favorite so BOOM, we had no problem locking that in on the first day.

For a minute there your Instagram feed was pretty art focused. If you weren’t skating, would you be pursuing art professionally? I would probably try to pursue soccer professionally.

But I do love art, and it's something I do on the regular. It’s my favorite hobby outside of skating. I am working on doing more art shows and getting more involved in the artist community in Venice, while continuing to do custom grip for kids - seboart on Instagram.

Your griptape technique and art game is strong. Any tricks, tips, or advice on griptape? Thank you. Grip is a little harder to paint on because it's a rough surface, but if you find good paint pens - I recommend @boardstix. Just start painting and have fun with it. My advice would be take your time, and don't get discouraged if you mess up, you can always cover it up with more paint.

What outside of skateboarding inspires you? Nature, exercise, art, music & movies.

Your bio on Lakai’s website describes your style as sleepy. What we want to know is what animal is your style most like and why? I would say a monkey, because they jump around and they are unpredictable, but agile, good at falling & catching themselves.

What are your thoughts on heelflips? I like heelflips a lot, but need to work on getting mine a little less mob!

Anything you’d like to add? Any memories of the CCS Catalog? CCS reminds me of childhood, we always got them in the mail and every time it was exciting to check all the new gear.

DRINK WATER, stretch, and have fun.
