When choosing skateboard wheels, all skaters must consider their skate surface preferences, as well as their personal skating style. Smaller wheels, 52mm in size and less, are perfect for street and park skating. These have a lower center of gravity, thus making it easier for flip tricks and technical skating. Mid-sized range from 53mm to 56mm. These really can be used for just about any type of skating and will excel on just about any terrain. Wheels greater than 56mm are meant for cruisin', ripping large transitions and ramps, and carrying more speed. Although these aren't the best for flip-tricks and technical maneuvers, many people enjoy these for their smooth rolling characteristics and increased speed. The last thing to consider when looking for a new set is the durometer, or hardness, rating associated with the wheel set. Durometer ratings start around 70A for very soft wheels and go to 99A for the hardest. Hard skateboard wheels generally will resist flat spotting and will absorb rough landings easier than softer wheels. Softer skateboard wheels will be smoother and faster over rough terrain but will sometimes stick or become bouncy when landing drops and tricks. These characteristics make the softer set superior for cruisin' and the harder set better for both street and park skateboarding.
