As essential components on a skateboard, trucks allow skaters to turn, grind, and perform flip-tricks smoothly. By providing a stable medium in which a skateboard deck can interact with the wheels and ground below, quality skateboard trucks are needed to progress your skills. With different styles, sizes, and construction types, it's important to choose proper trucks to suit your riding style, deck width, and wheel size.

Skate trucks are made with different height profiles. Most will skate a wide variety of surfaces and terrain types, but certain models are best suited either for technical street skating or shredding large transitions and cruising. Trucks with lower profiles are appropriate for technical skating and wheel sizes up to 53mm. A lower center of gravity will allow for easier flip tricks and maneuvers. Mid-height are made for all-around skating and will accommodate most styles and wheel sizes up to 56mm. Higher-profile, will fit larger wheels greater than 56mm in size and are made primarily for vert ramps, large transitions, and cruising.

Besides the height profile, the axel width plays an important role in determining what trucks are best for your skateboard setup. A large majority of them will have axel widths of 7.75" or 8.0". A rule of thumb when selecting your size is to closely match your deck width to that of the truck axel. Trucks with an axel width of 7.75" will fit well on decks slightly wider than 7.5" up to 7.88". Axel widths of 8.0" will accommodate decks of 8.0" to 8.25" wide. Additionally, decks larger than 8.25" will benefit from using trucks with larger axels up to 9" in width. Keep in mind that these rules are basic guidelines, and many skaters tailor specific skateboard trucks to their individual riding style and taste.
