Founded by Torey Pudwill at the age of 12, Grizzly Griptape initially was a small start-up out of Torey's garage in Simi Valley, California. The logo for the brand originally was sketched by Torey's dad. Once the logo was made, Torey had a stamp crafted for punching grizzly bear cutouts from griptape sheets. These early Grizzly Griptape prototypes became popular and were distributed locally to fellow skaters and skateboard shops alike. At the time, Torey was exclusively producing his griptape purely for the fun of it.

In 2010, when Torey spoke with Diamond Supply owner Nick Tershay about launching a product line, his brand finally became a full-on legitimate company. Ever since, Grizzly apparel and griptape have been flying off skate shop shelves and adding much needed traction to some of the best skaters on the planet. Iconic riders such as Paul Rodriguez, Ryan Sheckler, Joey Brezinski, Stevie Williams, and Rob Dyrdek all represent and support Grizzly Griptape through their skateboarding efforts.
